Turkey Tails And Flower Trails (After We Burnt, We Fly)

The painting emerged from layers of deep browns, umbers. I initially intended the earthy palette to remain the dominant voice of the work. Yet as the painting unfolded, with each layer, emotions surfaced: memories of rejection, experiences of abandonment, and moments when life felt dark, heavy, and suffocating. The painting became a place where those feelings could exist without restraint. Dense passages of shadow, fractured forms, and turbulent brushwork record that emotional journey. There were moments when the work seemed consumed by darkness, as if it might collapse under its own weight.

But transformation arrived through the act of painting itself.

Gradually, luminous corals, radiant turquoise blues, and shimmering golds emerged from the darker ground. Rather than erasing the shadows, these colors intertwined with them. The light did not replace the darkness—it grew from it. What began as a meditation on pain evolved into a reflection on resilience.

The turkey tail mushroom serves as a powerful metaphor throughout the work. It grows from fallen wood, transforming what has ended into the foundation for new life. In the same way, this painting speaks to the cycles of loss, renewal, and becoming.

More than a memory, this painting is a declaration of endurance. It is a testament to the human capacity to survive difficult seasons, to transform wounds into wisdom, and to emerge from hardship not diminished, but reborn.

This is part of the series “The Genesis of Bloom” where I explore the idea of belonging. I paint the feeling of my experience that I have often found myself suspended in the space between, neither here nor there, carrying fragments of many homes while belonging fully to none.

When captured that feeling in this series, I opened a new space.

A place not defined by geography, language, history, or expectation. A place where uncertainty becomes freedom, where fragmentation becomes possibility. With every brushstroke, a new universe emerges—one in which I can exist exactly as I am.

I invite you to enter that space with me.

Leave behind the need for definitions, explanations, and familiar references. Allow yourself to move beyond what you think you see and listen instead to what you feel. Here, there are no expectations to meet and no roles to play. There is only the quiet encounter between yourself and your deepest thoughts, memories, and emotions.

And perhaps, in that moment of surrender and self-discovery, you may find what I found:

A place to belong. A place to bloom
