I Love You More Than Red Flowers
Materials: Mixed-media on canvas (oil, acrylic, sand, modeling paste and others)
Dimensions: 36” x 36”
One day, in the middle of eating his favorite fried chicken, my son looked up and said, “I think about this every night before bed, and I always know that I love you more than fried chicken.”
It was such a simple and wonderful way to speak about love.
Children measure love against what they cherish most. As I thought about his words, I wondered what I would choose. For me, nothing speaks of joy, wonder, and beauty more than red flowers. They are abundance, vitality, and the promise of renewal.
If someone told me they loved me more than red flowers, perhaps it could only be said through a painting like this.
In this work, I continue to explore the floating spaces that appear throughout my practice—places that exist somewhere between memory, dream, and belonging. Layers of color intertwine like clouds or drifting smoke, inviting the eye to wander and become lost among them. Forms emerge and dissolve. Paths appear and disappear.
Yet beneath the movement and uncertainty, one feeling remains clear: the world is blossoming.
Because you are loved.
This painting is part of The Light We Carry, ten new paintings about the light we hold on to, and the light we pass on.
Each one began with a moment from my life: a question from a burned-out colleague, my son comparing his love for me to fried chicken, a friend I lost who promised to become a blue star, my grandmother telling me I was special. On the canvas, those moments became flowers. They rise out of rugged, sandy textures, dissolve into drifting color, and open again.
Where The Genesis of Bloom asked where we belong, this collection asks what we carry with us. Softness and strength. Memory and hope. The kindness of the people who shaped us. Even through dark seasons, that light stays, and it finds its way out.
All works are original, one-of-a-kind, mixed media on canvas.
