Serena – Ever in Bloom

Serena’s name means quiet calm, yet beneath that serenity lives an extraordinary spirit. She can speak about almost any subject with thoughtfulness, conviction, and a quiet strength that leaves a lasting impression.

When I began this painting, I imagined the blues and purples would evoke stillness and peaceful reflection. Instead, the canvas unfolded into something unexpected—an endless bloom of energy. Joy bursts through every movement of color, intertwined with moments of contemplation and tenderness, where beauty and vulnerability exist side by side.

The painting came to embody the same presence I see in Serena, my family member: calm without being passive, gentle without lacking strength, and thoughtful while radiating an unmistakable vitality. Like flowers that continue to bloom through changing seasons, her spirit reminds me that true serenity is not the absence of emotion, but the ability to hold joy, sorrow, hope, and resilience all at once.

“Serena – Ever in Bloom” is a celebration of a soul that continues to grow, inspire, and flourish—always becoming, always blooming.

This painting is part of The Light We Carry, ten new paintings about the light we hold on to, and the light we pass on.

Each one began with a moment from my life: a question from a burned-out colleague, my son comparing his love for me to fried chicken, a friend I lost who promised to become a blue star, my grandmother telling me I was special. On the canvas, those moments became flowers. They rise out of rugged, sandy textures, dissolve into drifting color, and open again.

Where The Genesis of Bloom asked where we belong, this collection asks what we carry with us. Softness and strength. Memory and hope. The kindness of the people who shaped us. Even through dark seasons, that light stays, and it finds its way out.

All works are original, one-of-a-kind, mixed media on canvas.
