The Magnificent Within
Materials: Mixed-media on canvas (oil, acrylic, sand, modeling paste and others)
Dimensions: 36” x 36”
My grandmother, who raised me during my early childhood, often told me that I was special, and that we were meant to live a special life. I questioned that from time to time. Are we truly significant, as billions of us move through this earth and disappear as if we never existed?
I often think of The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. When the Little Prince first encountered a garden filled with roses, he realized that his rose was not the only rose in the universe, as she had claimed, and that his planet was small and insignificant. He cried.
Eventually, he understood something profound: it is the time, attention, care, and love he gives his rose that makes her, indeed, unique in the world.
This painting is a reminder of that same truth.
We move through life with momentum—leaving marks, making choices, experiencing setbacks, growing, changing, and becoming. Our eyes wander through all of these experiences, just as the eye wanders through the layers, movements, textures, and gestures of this painting.
And then, eventually, we return to our emotional center.
The blooms at the heart of the painting represent that return—to our values, to what matters, and to the essence of who we are.
It is the little things we do every day, the marks we leave, the love we give, the choices we make, that make our lives uniquely ours.
No matter how small our planet may seem within the vastness of the universe, our presence here is not meaningless. We become significant through the life we create and the meaning we give to it.
I created this painting to be the center of the universe it inhabits—to brighten a room, shift its atmosphere, command attention, and invite conversation.
It is a reminder that you are significant.
You are unique.
You are magnificent.
This painting is part of The Light We Carry, ten new paintings about the light we hold on to, and the light we pass on.
Each one began with a moment from my life: a question from a burned-out colleague, my son comparing his love for me to fried chicken, a friend I lost who promised to become a blue star, my grandmother telling me I was special. On the canvas, those moments became flowers. They rise out of rugged, sandy textures, dissolve into drifting color, and open again.
Where The Genesis of Bloom asked where we belong, this collection asks what we carry with us. Softness and strength. Memory and hope. The kindness of the people who shaped us. Even through dark seasons, that light stays, and it finds its way out.
All works are original, one-of-a-kind, mixed media on canvas.
