The Nebula Within
Materials: Mixed-media on canvas (oil, acrylic, sand, modeling paste and others)
Dimensions: 24” x 30”
The Nebula Within invites us into a mysterious, dreamlike universe where flowers appear to float between the depths of the ocean and the vastness of the cosmos. Swirling blues, turquoise, and violet create an atmosphere of tranquility and wonder, while clusters of richly textured flowers emerge from the mist. Touches of luminous gold dance across deep indigo and purple, like distant stars illuminating an infinite sky.
There is a beautiful tension within this painting. The soft, flowing background evokes a sense of peace and weightlessness, while the expressive brushstrokes, dense textures, and dark floral forms carry movement, energy, and uncertainty. Light and darkness coexist, neither overpowering the other. Together, they create a world that feels both chaotic and harmonious, mysterious yet strangely familiar.
Like a nebula, where clouds of cosmic dust and gas hold the potential for new stars, our inner world contains an extraordinary universe of emotions, memories, contradictions, and possibilities. We carry darkness alongside light, strength alongside vulnerability, and uncertainty alongside hope. These seemingly opposing forces are not imperfections to overcome, but essential parts of who we are.
The Nebula Within is a quiet invitation to look inward with curiosity rather than judgment. It reminds us that we do not need to understand every part of ourselves or resolve every contradiction to find beauty and meaning in our existence. There is an entire universe within each of us—vast, mysterious, imperfect, and magnificent.
This painting is part of The Light We Carry, ten new paintings about the light we hold on to, and the light we pass on.
Each one began with a moment from my life: a question from a burned-out colleague, my son comparing his love for me to fried chicken, a friend I lost who promised to become a blue star, my grandmother telling me I was special. On the canvas, those moments became flowers. They rise out of rugged, sandy textures, dissolve into drifting color, and open again.
Where The Genesis of Bloom asked where we belong, this collection asks what we carry with us. Softness and strength. Memory and hope. The kindness of the people who shaped us. Even through dark seasons, that light stays, and it finds its way out.
All works are original, one-of-a-kind, mixed media on canvas.
