Hydrangea Nebula
Materials: Mixed-media on canvas (oil, acrylic, sand, modeling paste and others)
Dimensions: 36” x 36” x 1” (approx. 91cm x 91cm x 2cm)
Hydrangea Nebula explores the moment when the familiar dissolves into the extraordinary. Known for its remarkable ability to shift from blue to pink depending on the soil in which it grows, the hydrangea becomes a symbol of adaptation, transformation, and belonging. In this work, the flower leaves the earth behind and emerges as a celestial form—a nebula unfolding across an imagined universe.
Clusters of petals drift like planets, stars, and distant galaxies. Their identity remains intentionally ambiguous: are they flowers blooming or worlds being born? Suspended between the botanical and the cosmic, the composition invites viewers into a dreamlike space where creation is still in progress, where forms are constantly becoming.
Layers of modeling paste, sand, and gold create a richly textured surface that contrasts with soft, atmospheric brushwork. Swirling movements of blue, pink, and violet merge and dissolve into one another, echoing the hydrangea’s natural color shifts while suggesting clouds of stardust and celestial currents. Gold lines weave through the composition, illuminating pathways of transformation and adding depth and dimension.
At the center, a deep, elongated form carries clusters of blossoms like precious pearls suspended in space. The hydrangea, a flower often associated with gardens, fences, and the comforts of home, is reimagined here as a traveler between worlds. It carries the memory of belonging while existing in a state of beautiful uncertainty.
Hydrangea Nebula speaks to the experience of being both rooted and ungrounded, familiar and unknown. It is a meditation on transformation, resilience, and the endless capacity to bloom into something larger than ourselves.
This is part of the series “The Genesis of Bloom” where I explore the idea of belonging. I paint the feeling of my experience that I have often found myself suspended in the space between, neither here nor there, carrying fragments of many homes while belonging fully to none.
When captured that feeling in this series, I opened a new space.
A place not defined by geography, language, history, or expectation. A place where uncertainty becomes freedom, where fragmentation becomes possibility. With every brushstroke, a new universe emerges—one in which I can exist exactly as I am.
I invite you to enter that space with me.
Leave behind the need for definitions, explanations, and familiar references. Allow yourself to move beyond what you think you see and listen instead to what you feel. Here, there are no expectations to meet and no roles to play. There is only the quiet encounter between yourself and your deepest thoughts, memories, and emotions.
And perhaps, in that moment of surrender and self-discovery, you may find what I found:
A place to belong. A place to bloom.
